Hurtigruten to ban all single-use plastic products

Hurtigruten banned all ‘unnecessary’ single-use plastic items in July 2018, with everything from plastic straws, cutlery, drink mixers, plastic cups, coffee lids, toothpicks, plastic aprons, single-use packaging of butter and plastic bags to be removed from its entire fleet of custom-built expedition vessels – both operating on the Norwegian Coastal Route, as well as expedition cruises from pole to pole.

The goal is to become the first plastic-free shipping company in the world.

The single-use plastic ban will also be imposed on the hotels, restaurants and other establishments of Hurtigruten’s land-based operations on Svalbard.
