The theme for 2019 was ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’
‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ was chosen as a follow-on from MHG 2018’s ‘Say no to plastic’ theme. Plastics continued to be addressed in the 2019 campaign, but also looked at managing waste, including food waste, from a broader perspective.
The campaign achieved the following:
• Waste saved - an estimated 3,834 tonnes of waste, including food and plastic, has been reduced, reused, recycled or removed from the environment this year
• Social media reach - the campaign reached more than 565,000 people via social media, thanks to great support from across the travel industry. This was an increase of 58% on last year
• Number of people engaged - more than 6,500 industry staff and holidaymakers participated in this year’s campaign, nearly three times the number who supported last year (2,275) with many taking part in 119 clean-up activities worldwide
• Consumer pledges - a total of 1,386 holidaymakers made sustainable holiday pledges, up 8% on last year (1,290), with 31% choosing ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’.
Congratulations to holidaymaker Jane Penny who won a Patagonia cabin bag after she pledged to reduce, reuse and recycle on holiday. Jane travelled to the USA over the summer and said she carried her refillable bottle around with her everywhere she went.
