TUI Cruises - plastic-free holidays
In 2018, TUI Cruises launched a plastic reduction program ‘Wasteless’ as part of its vision to offer plastic-free holidays across the Mein Schiff fleet. By the end of 2020, TUI hopes to eliminate any plastic products and unnecessary disposables onboard all ships as well as operations on land.
Cabins are already equipped with glass water jugs to be filled at corridor water dispensers, removing reliance on bottled water, and refillable shampoo and shower gel dispensers save throwing away 370,000 plastic bottles per year fleet-wide. New measures include removing the plastic packaging on terry-cloth slippers (by placing them in the pockets of bathrobes) and using laundry bags made of bio-based plastic, saving 270,000 plastic bags per year. Other initiatives include using bio-based (not oil-based) plastic lids and lining on takeaway coffee cups, offering wooden stirrers, only giving out straws on request, and reducing plastic cocktail sticks.
